Slovenia Forest Service (SFS) is a public service, working in the frame of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food. The organisation directs the development of all the forests in Slovenia, which cover nearly 60 % of total Slovenian territory. SFS is also the wildlife management planning authority in Slovenia, which includes management planning of game species and involvement in all large carnivore conservation and management issues. Game management plans for Hunting Districts and subsidies for improving forest habitats are also part of SFS work. SFS is responsible for managing ten State Hunting Grounds with Special Purpose. The Department for Hunting and Wildlife is responsible for preparing crucial strategic documents in these topics. Core tasks of SFS include management strategies, action plans for wildlife monitoring, registration and evaluation of damages done by protected wildlife species. The Department also has an intervention team for large carnivore emergencies.

SFS has proved to be a sucessful and trusting coordinating beneficiary or partner of international projects and EU-funded LIFE-programs on more than one occation.

Hunters Association of Slovenia (HAS) is the county’s main hunting organization, with almost 21.000 hunters operating in more than 400 hunting grounds as volunteers. It is is an independent hunter and non-governmental environmental association acting in the public interest. The Association’s mission is sustainable management of wild game, preservation of nature, education of hunters and promoting protection of nature through cooperation with other nature and environmental organizations.

For more than 110 years, HAS has provided a professional  and unified interest organization for hunters.  HAS members are hunting clubs and regional hunter associations across Slovenia, as well as other associations acting in the interests of hunting. HAS frames hunting in the wider community, forms common hunting interests and takes care of their enforcement, connects and informs members, supports environmental and nature preservation, hunting ground and game management and enforcement of law-defined assignments. Internal organization and workings of HAS ensure its independence, democratic decision-making, achievement of goals, responsible assignment execution, proportional teritiorial representation of its members and solidarity among members.

HAS has been a member of The European Federation of Associations for Hunting and Conservation (FACE) since 1983 and in the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) since 1991.

The research activities at the Technical University in Zvolen (TUZ) are focused on the support of individual faculties and cover the area “Forest – Wood – Ecology and the Environment – Industrial and Environmental Engineering and Renewable Energy Sources”. TUZ cooperates closely with the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Slovak Republic. The Faculty of Forestry and University also cooperates with forest and hunting organizations and institutions as well as with the State Nature Conservation of the Slovak Republic in various areas of forestry, conservation and nature management research. The Faculty of Forestry, TUZ, has been implementing a pilot lynx camera trapping study in Slovakia since 2010 and has been an important part of the preparation and implementation of the Programs of care (management programs/plans) for all three large carnivores, lynx, wolf and a bear in Slovakia.

University of Ljubljana (UL) is Slovenia’s oldest and largest university, with a long standing record of excellence in research and education, over 50,000 students and over 5000 employees. Its member faculties have been involved in numerous projects, both national and EU, and have sufficient expertise and resources to coordinate and manage even the largest and most difficult ones. In this project, UL will be involved with its member, the Biotechnical Faculty. Its departments of Biology and Forestry have long been on the forefront of large carnivore conservation in Slovenia, providing support for managers in decisions regarding these difficult-to-manage species and pushing for a hard scientific basis in conservation-related decision making. The University has much experience and success in promotion and improvement of management and conservation of the all three Slovenian large carnivores–the wolf, the bear and the lynx. Dedication of UL researchers to conservation has been a driving force behind recent successes in this field. Also participating is the Veterinary Faculty, which has long standing experience in wildlife pathology.
